What Can I Expect From Therapy?

You may feel nervous about reaching out to a therapist. That anxiety is perfectly normal. Having the courage to overcome that anxiety and reach out for help is the first step in the process of empowering yourself to feel better.

Often times, when people begin therapy, they feel as if their distress is never going to end. Therapy helps people understand that they can do something to improve their situation. That understanding leads to changes that enhance healthy behavior; whether by improving relationships, expressing emotions better, performing better at work or school, or simply thinking more positively.

Don’t worry that you won’t know what to do once the session actually begins. It’s normal to feel a little anxious in the first few sessions. Our therapists have years of experience in setting the tone and getting things started. They are trained to guide each session in effective ways to help you get closer to your goals.

It’s important not to rush this process, which may take more than one session. While guiding you through the process, your therapist will let you set the pace when it comes to telling your story. As you build a relationship with your therapist, you may be willing to share things you didn’t feel comfortable answering at first. Once your therapist has a full history, the two of you will work together to create a treatment plan. This collaborative goal-setting is important, because both of you need to be invested in achieving your goals.
Sessions typically last between 55 and 60 minutes; most of our therapists prefer to meet with new clients weekly for the first few weeks, although each client and each situation are of course different.

How Long Does Therapy Take?

How long therapy takes depends on several factors: the type of issue you have, your characteristics and history, your goals, what’s going on in your life outside therapy, and how fast you are able to make progress. Everyone is different.

Some people feel relief after only a single session of therapy. Meeting with a therapist can give a new perspective, help you see situations differently and offer relief from worry, stress, anxiety, and pain. Most of our clients realize benefits after a few sessions, especially if they’re working on a single, well-defined problem.

Do You Offer Sessions by Zoom?

All of our therapists offer sessions via teletherapy, and many of them offer in-person sessions as well. Our teletherapy platform is secure and easy to use; real-time video chat sessions can be accessed from a smartphone, tablet, PC, or any other device with an internet connection and a camera.

Teletherapy sessions are generally covered/reimbursed by insurance carriers the same as are in-person sessions. To schedule an appointment, please contact us via e-mail at [email protected] or give us a call at 913-220-2450. You can also fill out our online form.

Will My Insurance Cover Therapy?

Many of our therapists accept insurance from the major health insurance carriers. The amount you will pay out of pocket is, generally, dependent on your insurance plan and whether or not you have met your deductible (if you have one). If you have questions as to your insurance coverage or your total expected out-of-pocket cost, we recommend contacting your insurance carrier at the number on the back of your insurance card.
